From Colorado's Front Range to your bathroom shelf — how the grapes grown on the Acquavena Estate became the most storied bar in our line.

 

The Acquavena Estate sits at the base of Colorado's Front Range in Larimer County — thirty acres where the high plains meet the first shoulders of the Rockies. We grow approximately 1,100 producing grapevines on three fenced acres. I make wine from the harvest. And for the past several seasons, some of that wine has found its way into a bar of soap.

That sentence sounds simpler than it is. What it represents is a supply chain with exactly one intermediary: the harvest. The grapes grow in our soil, they are pressed and fermented in our facility, and the resulting Rosé wine is incorporated directly into the ROSÉ Cleansing Bar. There is no distributor between the vine and the formula. I know the vintage, I know the varietal, I know the fermentation conditions. For an ingredient in a skincare product, that level of traceability is essentially unprecedented.

In this episode of Rooted, I want to explain what wine actually does for skin — because the answer is more scientifically interesting than most people expect — and why this particular expression of vine-to-skin feels like one of the most complete things Acquavena Organics has made.

Wine and Skin: An Ancient Relationship

The use of fermented wine in skincare is not a modern innovation. Historical records across ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome document the topical use of wine and wine-derived compounds for skin health. The intuition behind those practices was sound, even if the chemistry wasn't yet understood: fermented grape must contains compounds that actively support the skin's renewal and protection, and they have been doing so for as long as grapes have been grown.

The primary active compound in wine skincare is tartaric acid — the dominant naturally occurring alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) in wine grapes. AHAs work by loosening the adhesive bonds between dead corneocytes (the outermost layer of surface skin cells), accelerating their shedding and encouraging the emergence of the newer, brighter cells beneath. This process — which cosmetic science calls "desquamation" — happens naturally in healthy skin but slows with age, sun exposure, and environmental stress. Tartaric acid from fermented wine provides a gentle, pH-appropriate acceleration of that process without the irritation risk of synthetic AHA concentrations.

Resveratrol: The Molecule That Changed Skin Science

The other major contributor from the vine is resveratrol — a stilbenoid polyphenol concentrated in grape skins and amplified during fermentation as the grape defends itself against the stresses of the fermentation environment. Resveratrol entered mainstream skincare science in the early 2000s, when researchers studying its cardiovascular benefits noticed its equally potent antioxidant effects in skin tissue.

In topical application, resveratrol does several things that matter for visible skin health: it neutralizes free radicals generated by UV exposure before they can propagate oxidative damage through the skin's collagen network; it has been studied for its potential to support the expression of sirtuin proteins, which are associated with cellular longevity and DNA repair; and its anti-inflammatory properties help calm the chronic low-grade surface inflammation that contributes to uneven tone, accelerated aging, and barrier dysfunction.

Estate wine carries resveratrol at concentrations that reflect the specific varietal, the growing conditions, and the fermentation process — none of which are standardized in the commodity wine ingredients used by most skincare brands that claim wine on their label. The ROSÉ bar is built on wine that I know, from a vine I can walk to.

The Colorado Terroir

Larimer County sits at approximately 5,000 feet of elevation. The combination of high altitude UV intensity, significant diurnal temperature variation (hot days, cold nights), and a semi-arid climate creates growing conditions that are physiologically stressful for grapevines — and physiologically stressful conditions are exactly what drive a vine to produce higher concentrations of protective polyphenols, including resveratrol. The vine makes these compounds to protect itself. What protects the vine turns out to protect the skin as well.

There is a poetry to that that I don't think I would have anticipated when I planted the first vines. But it is also just chemistry. And the chemistry, as it turns out, is beautiful.

How to Use the ROSÉ Bar

The ROSÉ Cleansing Bar is most effective used two to three times per week as part of a brightening ritual — not because it is too strong for daily use, but because allowing the AHA activity to work in a rhythmic cycle gives the skin's natural renewal process time to respond. Work the bar into a rich lather, massage in slow circles for 30 to 60 seconds, and rinse with warm water followed by a brief cool rinse to close the pores. Follow with the Hand & Body Lotion while skin is still slightly damp.
